Welcome to Sacred Heart-Griffin High School, a Catholic, Dominican college preparatory high school that welcomes a diverse population to pursue academic excellence within the Dominican values of study, prayer, service and community.
The famous Dominican tradition of education is over eight hundred years old. SHG continues the Dominican mission in the 21st century inspired by the examples of famous Dominican teachers St. Albert the Great and St. Thomas Aquinas: seeing the world as a reflection of God’s love, wisdom, and mystery. The story of the Springfield Dominican Sisters starts in 1873 when six Dominican Sisters traveled from the Convent of St. Catherine of Siena in Kentucky to Jacksonville, Illinois to teach the children of Irish immigrants whose fathers worked on the railroad.
SHG’s motto is the Dominican motto: Veritas! Meaning “truth” in Latin. SHG students are taught to seek the deeper level of meaning in their lives from the friendships formed through our many sports teams, clubs or the experience of small-group sharing during one of our student retreat opportunities. An SHG education prepares each student for a lifetime of personal growth, community-building, and professional success. Each year, a large number of these students are successful in competition as National Merit Scholars, Illinois State Scholars, state-bound individual athletes and athletic teams as well as recipients of numerous awards in such disciplines as mathematics, science, language and the arts.
